Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died aged 30 following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match.
De Miguel suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest after the incident at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Monday, 2 November. He received emergency treatment and was taken to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Tenerife confirmed that he died at 8am local time on Tuesday.
Match abandoned after late collision
The incident occurred deep into added time, with the score at 2-2. De Miguel was pursuing a long ball near the halfway line when Owono came out of his penalty area to challenge for it. The goalkeeper’s knee appeared to strike the striker in the chest.
Owono was shown a straight red card. Players from both sides called urgently for medical attention as De Miguel lay on the pitch, and the match was subsequently abandoned.
Tenerife said on Monday evening that De Miguel was in intensive care and stable despite the seriousness of his condition. The club later reported a deterioration in his neurological condition before announcing his death on Tuesday morning.
Tributes from across football
In its official statement, Tenerife expressed its profound grief at the loss. The club offered its support to his family, friends and supporters, while his family thanked people for their messages and requested privacy.
Andorra offered its condolences, as did clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona. Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, Andorra’s majority shareholder, also paid tribute.
UEFA confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held at all its matches this week in memory of De Miguel.
A career across Spanish football
Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his career at Leganés B in 2015. Before joining Tenerife in 2025, he played for eight other Spanish clubs. Tenerife’s player biography also lists Lugo Fuenlabrada, Internacional de Madrid, Fuenlabrada, Unión Adarve, Navalcarnero, Unionistas de Salamanca and Castellón.
The striker scored 16 league goals as Castellón won promotion to Spain’s second division in 2023–24. He subsequently helped Tenerife secure promotion to the same level last season.
Police investigation and cup postponements
Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into the death, with prosecutors also expected to be involved. The Associated Press reported that investigators are examining possible involuntary manslaughter. The opening of an investigation does not establish criminal responsibility.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches scheduled for Tuesday, 3 November, as a mark of respect. New dates have yet to be announced.
De Miguel’s family has asked for its privacy to be respected as Spanish and European football pay tribute to the Tenerife forward.
